You may have purchased a lot of books from Kobo store, and read them on your computer, iPad or Android device previously. But now you get a new Kindle eReader, such as Kindle Paperwhite, you want to continue reading these Kobo books. So you may need to transfer your purchased Kobo files to Kindle. The question is when you directly transfer Kobo books to Kindle, your Kindle eReader will not recognize them. You may ask me why. In fact, you need to convert Kobo books to Kindle format before transferring them. In this article, I will tell you why, and how to deal with the problem.

Why we need to convert Kobo books to Kindle?

Before we convert Kobo books to Kindle, let’s learn about Kobo and Kindle supported formats. Then we can figure out why we need to convert the eBooks formats.

Kindle formats: All the Kindle devices including Kindle Paperwhite, Kindle Touch, Kindle Voyage and Kindle Fire(HD) only support Amazon unique formats, such as Mobi, AZW, AZW3, PRC, Topaz, etc.

Kobo formats: Kobo books are always with common EPUB, PDF and Kepub formats. This makes Kobo books are not compatible with Kindle devices.

As Kobo and Kindle support different eBooks formats, in order to read Kobo books on Kindle, we need to convert Kobo books to Kindle formats first.

How to convert Kobo books to Kindle?

Usually, when we purchase or download Kobo books, we will get different Kobo formats, such as EPUB, Kepub and ACSM. It depends on where and how we get them.

1 Remove DRM from Kobo eBooks (EPUB, Kepub, ACSM)

Books we purchase from Kobo online eBooks store are always with Adobe DRM protection. It locks us only can read Kobo books on its specific reading app or devices, such as Kobo Desktop, Kobo glo. We can not convert eBooks format unless we remove their DRM. So, removing Adobe DRM is needed first.

Case 1 Remove DRM from Kobo Kepub files

If we purchase Kobo books from Kobo online store, sync them via Kobo desktop, or download them on our Kobo e-Ink devices, we will get .kepub files which are protected by Adobe DRM. Now, please do as following steps.

For Kobo Kepub files syned via Kobo desktop

Step 1: Install Kobo Desktop and sync your Kobo books.

Run Kobo Desktop and login in it with your own Kobo account. Click “Library”, it will synced all your purchased books which will be with Kepub format and are Adobe DRM-protected.

Step 2: Install Epubor Ultimate Converter and launch it.

Once you run the program, all your synced books will be automatically load to the software. You can see them in the left column under “Kobo” tab. If they aren’t added into the tool, you can just drag your Kepub books the program or click “Add” to add books to it.

Your default Kobo Kepub content path:

For Windows: C:/Users/(your user name)/AppData/Local/Kobo/Kobo Desktop Edition/kepub

For Mac: …/Library/Application Support/Kobo/Kobo Desktop Edition/kepub

Step 3: Remove DRM from Kobo Kepub files.

Just drag the books from left side to the main interface of the software, all your added books will be decrypted soon. You can see the word “decrypted”. It shows books’ DRM has been removed.

For Kobo Kepub files downloaded on your Kobo e-Ink devices

Step 1: Connect Kobo to your computer via USB.

After connecting Kobo to computer, your Kobo will ask if you want to connect your eReader to your computer to manage files. Please select “Connect” to continue. This is very important.

Step 2: Remove Kobo Kepub files’ DRM from Kobo eReader.

Run Ultimate, the tool will detect your Kobo device and load all your existing books automatically. You can see “Kobo device” icon in the left side of the software. Then just drag your books to the main window of the tool, they will be decrypted soon.

Case 2 Remove DRM from Kobo ACSM files

If we don’t sync purchased Kobo books via Kobo Desktop or download them on Kobo e-Ink devices, they usually are ACSM files which are the key to download complete EPUB books. Step 1: Run Epubor Ultimate Converter.

Usually all your downloaded books will be loaded to the software automatically, you can see them display under “ADE” icon. If not, just drag them to the main interface of the program. Your EPUB books are saved in the default path: …/Documents/My Digital Editions.

Step 2: Remove DRM from Kobo ACSM files.

2 Convert Kobo EPUB books to Kindle

After removing Kobo DRM successfully, we will usually get EPUB files. Now we can convert these ePub books for Kindle format with only one click. Just select Mobi or azw3 as output format, and then click “Convert to xxx” button to convert eBooks format.
